Spirulina is the botanical name of a tiny bluish-green variety of algae scarcely longer than half a millimetre in length. The Latin word spirulina means 'small spiral' and perfectly describes the spiral-like structure. Just look at the cover of the book below...

Dr Ripley Fox's landmark book about spirulina

Spirulina has been known for hundreds of years but it's only been a few decades since Dr Ripley Fox published the first in-depth study of its potential. Since then, the use of Spirulina as a healthy complement to diet has soared and Spirulina tablets can be found quite easily in health stores. 5g of spirulina bring the proteins, vitamins needed by a 15 years old teenager. The CSV has built a full installation in a village and health statistics show a spectacular improvement amongst the local people. Even is this installation cannot yet function without proper supervision of the CSV personnel, lots of progress has been made towards the design of simpler plants that could be built in quantities in villages, providing local inhabitants with much-needed vitamins, proteins, etc...

Spirulina grows in troubled water and in tropical countries. The CSV has successfully acclimated spirulina and designed a low-maintenance spirulina growing plant. This plant produces spirulina with an acceptable quality.
